Defining Your Goals

For business systems that can tolerate some downtime, it's crucial to establish a few key goals

Recovery Time Objective (RTO)

This metric defines the acceptable amount of time that your application can be offline after a disaster. If your application needs to be back online within 24 hours, that will have a different type of solution than one that needs to be online within an hour or even a minute.

Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

This metric dictates how frequently your data is backed up. Depending on the criticality of the data, backup intervals can vary from daily to every few seconds. This is where technologies like continuous data protection (CDP) come into play, allowing for almost instantaneous data recovery and minimal data loss.
